Dhulikatta Karimnagar

Dhulikatta Buddhist Site is located at Dhulikatta village in Peddapalli manadal of Karimnagar district of Telengana. It is an ancient Buddhist site located on the banks of Hussainimiya Vagu. It is situated 33 km away from its district headquarters. Dhulikatta got its name from ‘Dhulikota’ which means a fort made of mud. The early Megasthenes specified this place as a metropolitan area among the thirty others.

Dating back to the Satavahana Era, it is a storehouse of remnants and history of the past. The huge Buddhist Mahastupa and Vihara are believed to be built at the dawn of the 2nd century BC and are about two-thousand years old. The ancient remains of the Stupa portrays that it might have been a very glorious town of the contemporary period. This site was protected by ramparts as per believers. The coins and the seals used by the Satavahanas and Romans were disclosed during excavations. This surely depicts that during old time also, financial dealings between the two countries were highly prevalent.

The sphere-shaped dome of the main Stupa was constructed by using forty-seven blocks of limestone and the blocks were enriched with symbols of ‘Muchalidanaga’, that means a serpent according to Buddhist folklores. Other than the Mahastupa, there are other artefacts found out from the nearby spots, which are historically significant. The Charmachakra Stupa is also an eye-catching masterpiece. The clay pottery used for household purposes which are of different colours such as red and black, specifies the spirited life led the by the people of that era. A sculpture of a mother holding her child in the left hand, made of bronze is another brilliant work of art. The Buddhist symbol and the footprints of the Buddha are also preserved here. The magnificent carvings on this site speak volumes on the brilliant craftsmanship of the artisans of that era.

Dhulikatta celebrates the three days long Satavahana festival in the month of January. During this time, tourists mostly flock to the historical site.
